‘Surrounded by Idiots’? Or Just Different Colors?

Thomas Erikson’s Surrounded by Idiots might sound harsh, but it’s really about understanding people—not judging them. The book explains that most conflicts happen because we speak different “behavioral languages.” Erikson categorizes personalities into four colors: Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue—each with their own strengths, needs, and quirks.

🔴 Reds are born leaders. They like action, results, and quick decisions. Lead them with directness and give them room to take charge. If they’re your boss, come prepared, speak up, and don’t take their bluntness personally.

🟡 Yellows are creative, energetic, and social. They shine in marketing, media, and events. Motivate them with enthusiasm and praise. If you work under a Yellow, expect fun and spontaneity—but help keep things grounded.

🟢 Greens are calm, loyal, and great listeners. They dislike pressure and change. Give them time, show appreciation, and avoid pushing too hard. As leaders, they create safe environments—but may struggle with confrontation.

🔵 Blues are analytical perfectionists. They excel in research, finance, and systems. Communicate with logic and detail. If they’re in charge, expect structure, high standards, and little room for emotional fluff.

But here’s the key: there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to leadership or communication. Each personality type brings something valuable. Reds push forward, Yellows inspire, Greens stabilize, and Blues perfect.

When we stop expecting people to behave like us and start meeting them where they are, teamwork becomes smoother, and misunderstandings shrink.

So maybe we’re not surrounded by idiots. Maybe we’re surrounded by different minds—with different colors, working toward the same goal.

Understanding these types helps us adapt—not manipulate. A diverse team with all four colors can thrive, as long as we respect each other’s styles. So maybe we’re not surrounded by idiots. Maybe we just need to look through a more colorful lens.
