Veteran lawyer Estelito Mendoza, often called “the lawyer of last resort” for his unmatched ability to defend powerful figures in high-stakes legal battles, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 95, the Philippine National Bank (PNB) announced.
Born on January 5, 1930, in Manila, Mendoza built a legal career that spanned more than half a century. He served as solicitor general under President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. from 1972 to 1986, a period that saw some of the most complex and controversial legal cases in Philippine history. But even after leaving public office, Mendoza remained a towering figure in the legal profession, known for his sharp mind, meticulous strategy, and ability to turn the tide in favor of his clients.
His reputation as “the lawyer of last resort” wasn’t just a nickname—it was a testament to his skill in defending those who found themselves in the country’s most high-profile legal battles. When former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo faced plunder charges, Mendoza was there. When Senators Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and Juan Ponce Enrile needed legal representation, they turned to him. His influence reached the highest levels of government, and his cases often had national implications.
Even in his later years, Mendoza continued to take on significant cases. He was chosen to represent Vice President Sara Duterte in her three certiorari petitions before the Supreme Court concerning the controversial ₱125 million confidential fund she received in 2022.
Mendoza’s passing marks the end of an era—one where legal brilliance, resilience, and sheer tenacity defined the courtroom. His legacy is one of intellect and impact, shaping not just the legal profession but also the course of Philippine history. For many, he was more than just a lawyer—he was a force to be reckoned with.
