Jose Rizal: The Iconic Film Returns to Netflix for Rizal Day

The iconic 1998 film Jose Rizal is making a grand return, landing on Netflix this December 30, perfectly timed to commemorate Rizal Day. The streaming platform has already included the late Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s critically acclaimed masterpiece in its “Coming Soon” lineup.

Featuring Cesar Montano as the revered Philippine national hero, the film delves into the life, sacrifices, and legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal. Upon its release, it made waves as the most expensive Filipino movie ever produced, with an unprecedented budget of ₱80 million. It also swept the 1998 Metro Manila Film Festival, clinching 17 awards, including Best Film and Best Actor.

The film’s legacy continues to shine, having been digitally restored and re-released by GMA Pictures. It was featured at the 2024 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival last August and during the Sine Sigla sa Singkwenta program celebrating the MMFF’s 50th anniversary in September.

After witnessing the remastered version at Cinemalaya, Cesar Montano shared his emotional response, saying, “Naiiyak pa rin ako. Sobrang ganda ng pagkakasulat. Napaka-genius ng pag-direct. Natutuwa ako because of this newly restored version, nalulungkot lang na wala si Direk Marilou to witness it.”

This Netflix re-release offers a new generation the chance to experience the brilliance of one of Philippine cinema’s finest works.
