DepEd Sets Public School Opening on June 16, 2025, Marking Return to Old Academic Calendar

The Department of Education (DepEd) has officially confirmed that public schools nationwide will commence classes for School Year 2025–2026 on June 16, 2025. The announcement was made through a report aired on 24 Oras Weekend on Saturday.

This development signals a full return to the pre-pandemic academic calendar, as stipulated in DepEd Order No. 12, Series of 2025.

The upcoming school year will span until March 31, 2026, encompassing a total of 197 school days. This count includes days allotted for End-of-School-Year (EOSY) rites. However, DepEd clarified that this number may still be adjusted depending on unforeseen disruptions or future policy changes.

Enrollment and Brigada Eskwela—a nationwide school maintenance and preparation initiative—will be conducted from June 9 to 13, exactly one week prior to the official opening of classes.

The decision to revert to the traditional June-to-March school calendar follows President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s approval in May 2024. The move has been widely supported by educators, parents, and students alike, many of whom have expressed a strong preference for the familiar academic rhythm that was in place before the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated calendar shifts.

With the shift now in motion, public schools are set to operate once again within a schedule that aligns with long-standing national academic traditions.
