Enrile Calls Out “Irony” of Those Seeking Justice Amid ICC Case

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile took to Facebook on Tuesday night, commenting on the “irony” of individuals who allegedly committed “violent acts of injustice” now crying out for justice. Without naming names, his remarks came shortly after former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for crimes against humanity in connection with his administration’s drug war.

“What a pathetic and ghastly irony! Those who allegedly committed unwarranted and violent acts of injustice are now drowning and gasping for justice. In their desperate distress, they grasp at straws for help and called for widespread national prayer rallies to a God they called ‘stupid’,” Enrile’s post read.

He went on to say, “They blame nearly everyone else—except themselves—for their miseries which they themselves created because of their lust, arrogance, hubris, and hunger for power and pelf.”

Duterte is currently facing charges before the ICC over alleged extrajudicial killings of drug suspects and criminals. His legal team argues that his arrest was unlawful, claiming he was kidnapped when he was taken to The Hague to face the ICC.

Enrile further remarked, “They now claw for whatever support and sympathy and support they could muster to extricate themselves from a tight legal trap that they themselves dug for themselves. Karma!! Abracadabra!! What a tragic miscalculation!!!”
